Description
Currently extinct, Moas were large, flightless birds native to New Zealand. These herbivorous avians were hunted to death by the ancestors of the Maori. The smaller bird, a Kiwi, is also native to New Zealand. While still alive, Kiwis are threatened by invasive species such as rats and cats brought over by human colonizers. Moas and Kiwis are both members of the superorder Palaeognathae, which contains the flightless Ratites and the flight-capable Tinamous, the latter of which were determined to be the the closest living relatives of Moas, oddly enough.
